Back Pain

Back Pain

Almost 4 years ago, I stepped off
a curb and ruptured my L4-L5 disk. I think it was caused by years of
doing stupid things to my back, and that curb was the last straw. I have not
had surgery. I have, however, had the luxury of not having to work full
time for any of those 4 years.
What helped me was eventually
(after 9 months of pain, of spending all my time lying on my floor, of
being essentially completely disabled, of taking 15 ibuprofen or enteric
coated aspirin a day) finding a doctor who believes strongly in
rehabilitation — only 1/100 of his ruptured disk patients get surgery!
He set me up on a program of physical therapy, which I still try to
follow, and which always helps when I get flare-ups, which are always
due to not exercising, or doing something stupid to my back. He also
gave me a series of epidural corticosteroid injections, which gave me
tremendous relief. I have not needed to see my doctor for 2 years now.

Surgery should be the absolute
last resort, in my opinion. I heard about studies that showed
the outcome 2 years after a back injury to be the same, whether or not
surgery was performed. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it makes no
difference, sometimes it makes things worse. And after surgery, one
still has to do physical therapy. In my experience, rehab after surgery is
much harder.

I started on Herbalife in November
of 1997. About 3 months ago, one of my Herbalife colleagues recommended
adding Xtra-Cal and Herbalifeline to
my program. The Herbalife really does seem to help — I take 2 Xtra-Cal
three times a day and up it to three Xtra-Cal three times a day when I
have pain. Also, I read here from someone (thank you, whoever it was!) that
the Thermojetics Beverage also has anti-inflammatory properties, and so
I drink it in the mornings as I do my exercises. Not only does it ease
the pain, but it gives me the energy to work hard. I wish I’d known
about Herbalife 4 years ago — it would have spared me a lot of pain.

I can’t say I’m pain-free, but it
is at a manageable level, about a 1 on a scale of 10, and I do have
fairly long stretches without any pain.

Disk pain is at best unbearable,
and the most devastating thing that has ever happened to me. At times, I
was willing to do absolutely anything for relief. But with patience, it does
get better.

Herbalife products do not cure any
disease or ailment. Herbalife is simply nutrition that has been designed so
that the cells of our bodies are as fully nourished as possible. This
allows the cells to grow and repair and to perform their functions with
the maximum efficiency possible.
